CAN MERCY AND JUDGMENT COEXIST?

2

"LIFE IS NOT FAIR,
BUT GOD IS JUST...
AND HE HAS AN ETERNITY TO PROVE IT!"

-Pastor Brad
Illustration:  A child is brutally raped, beaten, tortured and murdered.  The guilty man is caught and brought before a judge with whom the child's grieving mother and father await the verdict.  The judge says, "Because I am a loving and forgiving judge, I am letting the offender go free without any punishment."

Now let's say you are the mother or father in this illustration.  How do you feel about the judge's verdict? Mercy has been extended but justice has not been served!

May I suggest to you that judgment is an extension of God's love! (see Hebrews 12:5-11).  And may I also suggest to you that, in this illustration, righteously judging the criminal would have extended mercy to both the victims parents...AND the criminal.*

"WE CANNOT UNDERSTAND THE LOVE
OF GOD UNTIL WE GRASP THE HORROR
OF OUR SIN AND THE SACRIFICIAL
TORMENT THAT JESUS CHOSE TO
PAY ON OUR BEHALF."

-Pastor Brad

In God's kingdom, mercy and justice coexist.
*I'm interested to hear from you - How could it be possible that  judging the criminal righteously would be "merciful?"

CAN MERCY AND JUDGMENT COEXIST?

1

"The Lord loves justice...
It is I
(God) who judges with equity...
For the Lord is a God of justice."
Psalm 37:2875:2Isaiah 30:18
When I first came into my current pastorate roughly seven years ago, an otherwise kind and loving family left the church because of my unwavering commitment to the Bible as "inspired by God, inerrant and infallible as originally given" (see Psalm 19:72 Timothy 3:16-172 Peter 1:20-21).

They readily accepted the "love and forgiveness" part of God's character, but they did not believe in His "justice." "Our God is NOT PUNITIVE!," the woman assured me, as she left the church parking lot for the final time.

To the contrary Oswald Chambers declares,

"In the teachings of Jesus Christ the element
of judgment is always brought out -
it is the sign of the loving God.
-Oswald Chambers,
My Utmost for His Highest, May 5
So, what do you think?  Can mercy and judgment coexist?

THE EARLY MORNING

"In the morning, O LORD,
You will hear my voice;
In the morning I will order my prayer
to You and eagerly watch."

Psalm 5:3

Spending time with the Lord EARLY in the morning is often the best part of my life!
"The Lord is with you
when you are with Him."

2 Chronicles 15:2b
God invited Moses saying,

"So be ready by morning,
and come up in the morning to
Mount Sinai, and present yourself
there to Me on the top of the mountain."

Exodus 34:2

Most of my most profound experiences with God have been before the arrival of the day's sun.  As always, our model is Jesus:
"In the early morning, while it was still dark,
Jesus got up, left the house,
and went away to a secluded place,
and was praying there."

Mark 1:35
And I can hear someone say, "But I'm not a morning person."  And I would respond, "It's not the time...it's the principle."

"So that He Himself will come
to have first place in everything."
Colossians 1:18c

A 'HATED' GENERATION?

Introduction
"But realize this, that in the last days difficult times will come.  For men will be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, revilers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy, unloving, irreconcilable, malicious gossips, without self-control, brutal, haters of good, treacherous, reckless, conceited, lovers of
pleasure rather than lovers of God..."
-2 Timothy 3:1-4
Did you ever ask yourself, "How could such a generation of men ever become so...evil?" Honestly, I never really thought about it, 'til now (see yesterday's GTWired! for context).
"Since you have forgotten the law of your God,
I also will forget your children."

-Hosea 4:6

Did you ever ask yourself, "How could that happen, an entire generation (save those who repent and turn to God for salvation) forgotten by God?"  Again, I never really thought about it, 'til now.
In fact, my thoughts have been consumed by it since my experience two nights ago (see A Forgotten Generation).  Why would God cause me such "grief?" Why would He 'break my heart' like that? What did He want me to see?  "What did He want me to learn?"
I'll answer every one of those questions tomorrow.

A FORGOTTEN GENERATION

"Since you have forgotten the law of your God,
I also will forget your children."

Hosea 4:6
Last night I was asked to be a chaperone for one of our local, public high-schools (these schools are so prestigious and highly esteemed that families have moved cross-country to provide the opportunity for their children to attend).  It was a  community presentation by the frosh/soph boys and girls chorale.  This school has quite an excellent reputation...and deservedly so.  The teachers are superb and truly care for the kids.

With about 150 students, they are divided into three groups, two groups of girls...and the boys.  Since the teachers can't be in two places at one time, they need "chaperones" to watch the students who are waiting to perform, while the teachers are with the students on stage.

Anyway, the "chaperone assignments" were given out before the show and I, along with another gentleman was in charge of the boys.  Each student was well-groomed, well-dressed, white shirts and black ties all.  It provided a rare and unique glimse into today's youth culture, away from the confines of their established authority figures.

No parents, no teachers, they felt free to be themselves...and they were.2 Timothy 3:1-4 talks about some of the characteristics and attributes that we can expect from men in this "Age of Delusion."

Last night I saw the boys...who will become those men...

And I've been weeping ever since.

*I imagine that some of you, like me are asking yourself, "Didn't the fact that two adult, male, chaperones were there, influence their behavior?  Astonishingly...very, very little.

THE SACRIFICE OF...FOOLS!

"Guard your steps as you go to the house
of God, and draw near to listen rather
than to offer the sacrifice of fools;
for they do not know they are doing evil."
Ecclesiastes 5:1, bold mine

The sacrifice of fools...hmmm.  What initially strikes me is that these "evil sacrifices" are being made by fools unaware of their folly (see above).  1 Samuel 15:22 tells us that, "to obey is better than sacrifice." God Himself reiterates this concept in Hosea 6:6 by saying, "I delight in loyalty rather than sacrifice."

God further states in Isaiah 1:15-16, "Even though you multiply prayers, I will not listen...remove the evil of your deeds from My sight...Learn to do good."  And again, God continues to express His passionate hatred of hypocrisy in Amos 5:23 by warning, "Take away from Me the noise of your songs; I will not even listen to the sound of your harps" (see alsoMatthew, chapter 23).

Jesus insightfully defined, "the sacrifice of fools" by quoting Isaiah 29:13 in Mark 7:6-7"Rightly did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites...This people honors Me with their lips, but their heart is far from  Me.  But in vain do they worship Me."  Vain Worship?  Wow!

Empty, futile, worthless worship...Hmmm.

Some things feel good and seem right...but aren't (seeProverbs 16:25).

Such is the religious spirit (see again Matthew, chapter 23)...

Such is "The Sacrifice of Fools."

The Road to SLAVERY

Generally, it appears to me that the average American is both selfish and lazy.  When it comes to who they vote for, pocketbooks win over morality.  In other words, people have either forgotten, or are completely ignorant of the responsibilities of freedom.

"No wonder, for even Satan
disguises himself as an angel of light."

2 Corinthians 11:14

His rise to power and ability to win the favor of otherwise hard-working and intelligent people is a monument to human gullibility.  He rose to prominence and power because of a promise to shore up the economy and put people back to work.
Once they  had health-care, job security, and paid vacations, it was "all good."  In fact, it is said of Hitler's Germany,
"If freedom meant starvation,
then slavery was preferable."

-Gerald Suster, Hitler:
The Occult Messiah, p.135

And I remember reading something about the Old Testament Israelites that was strikingly similar...*

That would never happen here in the United States of America though...right?

*On more than one occasion the Israelites expressed the opinion that they would rather "return to Egypt" than face the challenges of the wilderness (see Exodus 16:2-3, as an example).

Where Is the Love?

GodThoughtsWired!            Tuesday, November 30, 2010
Evangelizing the Church in the Age of Delusion
"where is the love"

"What's wrong with the world...
people livin' like they aint go no mamas...
Father help us,
send some guidance from above...
it just aint the same...
new days are strange, is the world insane...
The truth is kept secret,
its swept under the rug,
if you never know truth then
you'll never know love..."

-Black Eyed Peas
*

Today's GodThoughtsWired! comes to you compliments of my teenage daughters, Alison  (15) and Jennifer (14).  They are the one's that introduced me to the song, Where Is the Love, by the Black Eyed Peas.**

The youth of today are, perhaps, more in touch with the signs of the times in this "age of delusion"  than many of our churches and preachers:

"It just ain't the same...
new days are strange,
is the world insane?"

They ask, "Is the world insane?"  My answer is, "Yeah, pretty much."  However, it's not a surprise to Jesus.  Along time ago He anticipated the days in which we live and declared,

"Because they did not receive
the love of the truth so as to be saved.
For this reason I (God) will send
upon them a deluding influence
so that they will believe what is false..."
2 Thessalonians 2:10-11

A global rejection of God's truth is taking place right before our very eyes and the result?  The Bible calls it "delusion."  The Black Eyed Peas call it "insanity."

Amazing, isn't it?  Rock-n-roll bands asking God to "send some guidance from above" not realizing that...

HE ALREADY HAS.

THE SECRET OF CONTENTMENT... REVEALED!

THE SECRET
OF CONTENTMENT...
REVEALED!

"I have learned to be content
in whatever circumstances I am."

Philippians 4:11
Last week I talked about "The Secret of Contentment" and how some of the greatest Bible characters had learned how to be "content" regardless of circumstance.

SO WHAT'S THE SECRET!
Last week I said,

"The answer is perfectly described
in a single verse somewhere
in the book of Proverbs.
I'll give a FREE COPY
OF MY LATEST BOOK,
The Bible Says, Volume 1,
to the first 10 people to email
me the correct answer."
And the answer I was looking for is...PROVERBS 3:5!
"Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
and do not lean on your own understanding."

The ability to trust in God no matter what's happening in life, is the key to contentment. The apostle Paul had "learned to be content in whatever circumstances I am," because he had learned to put his trust in God and not rely on his own understanding.

BUT WAIT!  I learned something new from three otherGTW! subscribers.  Proverbs 19:23 (NIV) says,

"The fear of the Lord leads to life;
then one rests content,
untouched by trouble."
(bold mine)

CONGRATULATIONS to Geri from Seattle, Washington, USA, who answered Proverbs 3:5. And toSandra in Lawson, NSW, Australia; Joseph in North Carolina, USA; Chris in Recife, PE, Brazil,;and Arnold from Ashland, Kentucky, USA who alerted me to Proverbs 19:23.
"And Job died an old man,
and full of days,
well satisfied with life."

-Job 42:17, bold mine

How 'bout you?

looking to the reward!
"Considering the reproach of Christ
greater riches than the treasures of Egypt;
for he (Moses) was looking to the reward."
Hebrews 11:26
God is a "rewarder of those who seek Him " (Hebrews 11:6).  The theology of "rewards" is significant in the New Testament (see 1 Corinthians 3:11-15).  "Misthos," translated, "reward," is found in nearly half (thirteen) of the books of the New Testament writings.  Jesus first used this term in Matthew 5:12 by promising "great reward" in Heaven for those who are persecuted for His sake.
And then in the book of Revelation Jesus proclaims, "My reward is with Me" (Revelation 22:12) in reference to restituition for the works of His children done on earth.
Additionally, Paul makes it crystal clear that each Christian will be rewarded according to their individual labor for the Lord.  "Now he who plants and he who waters are one; but each will receive his own reward according to his own labor" (1 Corinthians 3:8).
Therefore, do not throw
away your confidence,
which has great reward."
-Hebrews 10:35, bold mine

CELEBRATING SIN!

CELEBRATING SIN!

"Enjoy the passing pleasures of sin..."Hebrews 11:25

I'll bet you didn't know the Bible said THAT!  Go ahead, look it up!  See!  I told ya!  It's just another way of saying the motto that "everyone of consenting age in any land knows,"

"What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas."

As I sit here re-reading the article from the USA Today Newspaper* whose entire premise is the celebration of sin, I weep for the United States of America.

The slogan is seven years old now, the article tells me,

The key moment came in 2004
when Laura Bush appeared on the
Tonight Show after a Sin City visit.
Jay Leno asked if she'd seen the
Chippendales male strippers.  Her
response, worth more than $1
million in advertising;
"Jay, what happens in Vegas,
stays in Vegas."

"There are no rules here," gushes one satisfied customer.  "Nowadays, visitors may feel let down if they haven't done what they wouldn't do back home," proclaims the marketing director of a "sin club" where clients pay $400.00 per hour for..."sin."

"The city's mayor, a former defense lawyer for gangsters," soberly laments that, "The real estate market is in the dumps, but he thinks new attractions, such as the downtown Mob Museum-due in fall 2011-will lure visitors."

Ahh, the celebration of sin.  By now, I trust that many of you are aware that the Bible verse at the top of the page? from Hebrews 11:25?  I took it completely out of context!  Did you look it up?

Well, how 'bout ending with a couple of Bible verses that are completely "in" context:

"There is a way which seems right
to a man, but its end is the way of death."

Proverbs 16:25

And,

"The wages of sin is death."
Romans 6:23

Always has been...Always will be.  Now there's a slogan for ya'.

DID YOU KNOW???
5
 "Be careful how you walk,
not as unwise men, but as wise."

Ephesians 5:15
DID YOU KNOW...That the theory of "Global Warming" is LAUGHABLE?  No, really!  The concept of global warming is a belief that the earth is "heating up" because of an increase in the concentration ofgreenhouse gases  around the world.  One such "greenhouse gas" is  nitrous oxide which, of course is...LAUGHING GAS!
Another misnomber associated with the theory of global warming is that an increase of carbon dioxide in our atmosphere is bad.  My studies of the experts in the field, on both sides of the debate, indicate that it would take a MONUMENTAL INCREASE OF CO2 that would take roughly AN ETERNITY to bring about (CO2 is currently 3 parts per million of our air.  It would need to increase to 1% of the atmosphere to become even slightly dangerous.  For example, in submarines, men breathe at least 100 or more times greater what we breathe...that's 300 parts per million, or .00003%).
Carbon Dioxide (CO2) is what makes plants grow.  The more CO2, the more fruits and vegetables.  So, the evidence suggests to me that we need more CO2, not less...
at least for the next 100,000 years or so.
So, the next time someone asks your opinion on "Global Warming" do what I do.  Tell  'em ...
"IT'S LAUGHABLE!"

 "Be careful how you walk,

Ephesians 5:15
DID YOU KNOW...with all the ruckus about one misguided pastor threatening to burn Qur'ans on 9/11/10, the U.S. army didn't hesitate to burn  Bibles in Afghanistan because they were upsetting to local Muslims?  See for yourself by clicking on CNN World.
So, let me see if I've got this right, it's not ok to burn Qur'ans because it would be offensive to Muslims, however, it is ok to burn bibles so as not to offend Muslims?  Yeah, I think I've got it right.
DID YOU KNOW...that here in Sodom & Gomo...I mean the San Francisco Bay Area, the decision was recently made to install condom machines in the San Francisco County Jail.
The San Francisco Chronicle notes, "Although sex among inmates is technically illegal, the sheriff's department decided to install the machines anyway."  Sheriff Michael Hennessey acknowledges that the decision "may be controversial," but says the larger health-education message is important.
So let me see if I've got this right, we are helping to facilitate the "illegal activity" of prisoners who are in jail because of "illegal activity."*

DID YOU KNOW THAT...Rick Warren recently spoke at an ISNA conference? (The Islamic Society of North America) The ISNA is officially tied to the Muslim Brotherhood whose official motto is:
"Allah is our objective.
The Prophet(Mohommed) is our leader.
Qur'an is our law.
Jihad is our way.
Dying in the way of Allah
is our highest hope."
And the founder of the ISNA, Hassan Al-Banna, was a strong supporter of Adolph Hitler.  Oh, back to Warren.  At this conference he opened up by saying,"As-salamu Alaykum.  I come to you today deeply humbled and honored by this invitation...I am not interested in interfaith dialogue, I am interested in interfaith projects."
Hmmm...Please click on NISA to see for yourself.
AND DID YOU KNOW THAT...At the inauguration of now President, Barak Obama, Warren addressed the deity to whom he was praying as, "The compassionate and merciful one?"  On the surface it seems harmless enough until you realize that this is the invocation that starts every chapter of the Qur'an except one.
AND DID YOU KNOW THAT...In that same prayer Warren equated the Jesus of the Bible with the Jesus of the Qu'ran when he referred to Jesus as "Isa?"
AND DID YOU KNOW THAT...In that same prayer Warren skillfully avoided closing the prayer "in Jesus name?"

An Inspiration for Today...A Resource for a Lifetime!
there's just something
about that name!
2
A couple weeks ago I wrote about a very exciting and poweful work that the Holy Spirit is doing in our local church.  As a reminder:
"I challenged our congregation to...use the name of Jesus whenever they are referring to God. WHAT A DYNAMIC DIFFERENCE! We've begun a "There's Just Something About That Name" testimony time every Sunday morning after worship. Powerful!  Will you join us? Do you have the courage? Seriously, in the end - every knee will bow and every mouth will confess the Lordship of Jesus anyway...Why not start now!"
Well, I'm THRILLED! to report that we are definitely on to something!  This past Sunday's "Testimony Time" was SENSATIONAL!!!
EXAMPLE 1:  We are no longer allowing people to take the name of the Lord in vain, without consequence!
"You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not leave him unpunished who takes His name in vain."Exodus 20:7
When somebody uses the name of "Jesus Christ" or "Christ" or "God" in a blasphemous way, we simply reply, "Jesus has nothing to do with this," or "Jesus isn't responsible for this" or...you get the point, I hope?
EXAMPLE 2:  Our youth pastor's wife is a Drama teacher at a local Junior College and is involved in an upcoming community play.  When she realized that the name of Jesus was going to be used "innappropriately" she spoke up!  Very sensitively and gently she simply said to the director, in front of the entire cast, "Do we really need to take God's name in vain here?  Does it really add any value to the scene?  My relationship with Jesus is the most important thing in life and, to be honest, I'm offended by this."  And you know what?  THEY TOOK IT OUT!
WAY TO GO NIKKI!
She wasn't being beligerent, or arrogant, or judgemental...She was just being honest, and she was taking the opportunity that God provided her...
To lift up the name of Jesus!
How 'bout you?
