God's Invitation to You!

GodThoughtsWired!            Wednesday, February 29, 2012
An Inspiration for Today...A Resource for a Lifetime!

god's invitation to you!

"He is intimate with the upright."
-Proverbs 3:32

For those of us who are passionate about mining the riches of God's word, a wonderful study can be done of the Hebrew word, "sodh."  It denotes, "private, intimate, communication."  How interesting that our relationship with God is whatever we choose it to be.

This kind of intimacy or "extreme closeness," is only available to those who seek it.  It is conditional.  Conditional upon living in reverence to God and an upright walk with the Lord.

Look at how the word, "sodh," is used in Psalm 25:14:

"The secret (sodh) of the Lord is for those
who fear Him; and He will
make them know His covenant."

Intimacy with God is an invitation, a conditional offer, only available to those who would deny themselves and take up their daily cross (see Luke 9:23).  It motivates me to, "lay aside every encumbrance, and the sin that so easily entangles us, and run with endurance the race set before us" (Hebrews 12:1).

If you haven't received yours yet...

Consider this God's invitation...to YOU!

The Kingdom of God is Like...A Sporting Event

GodThoughtsWired!               Friday, February 24, 2012
Evangelizing the Church in the Age of Delusion

the kingdom of god is like...

a sporting event!

"It is not the hearers of the law who
are just before God, but the doers of
the law who are justified."
-Romans 2:13

From demons to deacons, many in the world "believe" in God (see James 2:19).  Jesus told us that the wheat and the chaff would grow up together (see Matthew 3:12).  But the kingdom of God is like...a sporting event.  Those who honor the Lord with their lips only (see Mark 7:7), can be likened to the spectators:

"But prove yourselves doers of the word
and not merely hearers who delude themselves."
-James 1:22

On the other hand, the true followers of Christ can be likened to the players.  There are no perfect players.  However, there are players who, empowered by God, do great exploits for His kingdom because they are, "overwhelming conquerors" in Jesus and, "can do all things" through Christ who strengthens them (see Romans 8:37; Philippians 4:13).

Spectators are spectators and players are players.  Spectators are not players.  Spectators who think they are players are...DELUDED (see Matthew 7:21-23).

Yes, I believe the kingdom of God is like a sporting event.

Would you consider yourself a spectator...or a player?

How do you know? (see 2 Corinthians 13:5; Matthew 7:20).

but i was born this way!

"No matter gay, straight or bi
Lesbian, transgendered life
I'm on the right track, baby..."
-Lady Gaga, Born This Way Lyrics
Every baby is born selfish.  Does that make selfishness good?  Does that mean they must embrace selfishness in adulthood to be happy?  Does it mean they cannot change?  Does it mean they shouldn't change?
Is teaching a small child not to be selfish a bad thing?  Is challenging a child's selfishness intolerant,* biggoted and judgmental?

Scientific Evidence for the Divine Inspiration of the Bible: The $1000 Athiest Challenge!

GodThoughtsWired!            Friday, February 17, 2012
Evangelizing the Church in the Age of Delusion

scientific evidence

for the divine

inspiration

of the bible!

part 1

THE $1000 ATHIEST CHALLENGE*

I've grown weary of athiest pundits like Richard Dawkins and Bill Maher frivolously and irresponsibly claiming that Christianity is without evidence.  Not only is biblical Christianity based on the sufficiency of the evidence (see Hebrews 11:1), in many cases the Bible has been found to be well ahead of its time when it comes to science.

Here are three significant examples:

EVIDENCE #1.  Long before science understood the significance of blood...God supernaturally revealed it through Moses:

"For the life of the flesh is in the blood."
-Leviticus 17:11

DID YOU KNOW?  Less than 200 years ago it was considered "cutting edge" medicine to "bleed" the patient.

EVIDENCE #2.  Thousands of years before science understood the myriad of stars...Jeremiah prophecied it!

"The stars of heaven cannot be counted."
-Jeremiah 33:22

DID YOU KNOW?  As recently as the 17th century science thought that there were only about 6000 stars!

EVIDENCE #3.  Centuries before science understood gravity...the Bible declared it!

"He...hangs the earth on nothing."
-Job 26:7

DID YOU KNOW?  As recently as 1543ad Hindus believed that the earth was supported by 4 elephants on a turtle, and the Greeks believed that Atlas carried the world upon his back.

Wow!  Three startling examples of the scientific evidence for the divine inspiration of the Bible?

is suicide

the...

unforgivable sin?

WHAT DOES THE BIBLE SAY?
For anyone who has ever had a friend or loved one commit suicide the answer to this question is of utmost concern.  Is suicide, as some have suggested, "The Unforgivable Sin?"  The answer is,
ABSOLUTELY NOT!

Suicide is murder...self-murder.  And murder is sin, no question.  So the question becomes, "Does God forgive sin?"  And, of course, the answer is...YES!
"Behold the Lamb of God (Jesus),
who takes away the sin of the world."

-John 1:29

I recently read an article by a well-known author who is inolved in the popular men's movement, "PromiseKeepers."  He writes,

"If temptation means anything, it means
Christ was tempted in every way as we are.
That would mean not only heterosexual
temptation but also homosexual temptation!
I have found this insight to be very helpful
for gay men struggling with their sexuality."

OH DEAR GOD HELP US!!!  We're being destroyed for lack of biblical knowledge!!! (see Hosea 4:6).

So this, "world reknowed," Christian psychologist claims that Jesus was tempted "homosexually?"

Well let me simply say this, about that...

NOTHING!  ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!! COULD BE FARTHER FROM THE TRUTH!!!

Have you ever heard this question asked?  Perhaps you've asked it yourself?  "How could a loving God send someone to Hell?"  It seems contradictory, doesn't it?  Well, your right!  It is!  Contradictory, I mean!

While this question has undoubtedly been used as an excuse by thousands not to seek God, or to reject the salvation that God offers, the truth is, the question, "How could a loving God send anyone to Hell" is both naive and ignorant!  It is naive of who God is, and it is ignorant of what the Bible really teaches!

What is true is that God IS a God of love and, as such, has no desire to see people go to Hell.  In fact, far from sending anyone to Hell, God so loved the world that He sent His Son to keep people out of Hell! (see John 3:16).

You see, God wants everybody to be saved (see 2 Peter 3:9; 1 Timothy 2:3-4), but men choose Hell (eternal separation from God) by rejecting the salvation that God offers! (see John 3:17-19).

spiritual construction workers

"Do not withhold good from those to
whom it is due when it is within your
power to do it."
-Proverbs 3:27
God challenges us to PURSUE! edification (see Romans 14:19).  That means we are called to proactively, aggressively seek it?  Edification means to build up.  ALL OF US are called to be, "Spiritual Construction Workers!"  Question:  "What percentage of what we do is supposed to involve edification?"
"Let all things be done for edification."
-1 Corinthians 14:26
That's right...EVERYTHING!  Question:  "What percentage of what we say is supposed to be geared toward edification?"
"Let no unwholesome word proceed
from your mouth, but ONLY such a
word as is good for edification..."

-Ephesians 4:29
EVERYTHING!  Every word, every deed, every thought...IT'S ALL ABOUT EDIFICATION!  It's all about building up one another.  Building up your spouse, building up your kids, your parents, your co-workers.

All of us are called to be, "Spiritual Construction Workers!"
Let's get to work!

guess that sin!
THE CHURCH'S GREATEST NEMESIS!
Let's play a little game today called, "Guess that sin."  I'll give you some hints, then once you think you know which sin I'm talking about go to the new Bible Says video for today's discussion.
HINT #1.  After my first seven years in ministry, I found this SIN to be so pervasive in the church that it became the subject of my very first Bible Says Series brochure entitled, What Does the Bible Say About...click here if you think you know it.
HINT #2.  Everybody agrees that it's wrong but very few ever admit to actually doing it.  Got it yet?  Click here if you think you know!
HINT #3.  Every church that's ever existed has had to deal with it at one time or another and despite the dilligence of leadeship to thwart it...it never fully goes away.  Click here if you know what I'm talking about!
HINT #4.  This SIN has been responsible for the downfall and destruction of more churches that all other sins combined (in my opinion).  Click here for a discussion of this SIN.  What I call, "The Church's Greatest Nemesis!"

follow through!
Byron Shenk (a GodThoughts subscriber), is a professor of kinesiology at George Fox University.  Kinesiology is the study of human movement and motion.  Professor Shenk writes,
"I can tell you that two of the most
important reasons for the follow
through in athletics are 1) accuracy
and 2) prevention of injury."
I find the spiritual application to be profound.
#1.  Accuracy.  James told us that those who don't follow through on their walk with God are in error, they are deluded.  "Prove yourselves doers of the word and not merely hearers who are deluded" (James 1:22).  Paul said that it is, "Not the hearers of the law who are justified, but the doers of the law will be justified" (Romans 2:13).  And of course, Jesus likened those who hear the words of God but do not, "follow through" as those who "build their house on the sand" (see Matthew 7:24-27).
#2.  Prevention of Injury.  Following through on our commitments and promises help to maintain healthy lives and relationships, but a lack  of follow through can bring great harm.  Things like, procrastination, broken promises and unfulfilled commitments have all sorts of consequences...all of which are negative.
Isn't it interesting that here again, God's creation provides vivid, living illustration of eternal truths and spiritual realities.
"For since the creation of the world
His invisible attributes, His eternal power
and divine nature, have been clearly seen,
being understood through what has been made,
so that they are without excuse."
-Roman
s 1:20
And finally, a comment from Jesus about the importance of the "follow through," "No one, after putting his hand to the plow and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God" (Luke 9:62).
Enough said.

My Best Advice: Learning from the Legends

my best advice!
LEARNING FROM THE LEGENDS...
"Then God said to Noah...Make for yourself
an ark...I am bringing the flood...everything
that is on the earth shall perish...But I will
establish My covenant with you."
-Genesis 6:13-18
I recently noticed this.  When God approached Noah about building an ark, there were many logical responses that Noah could have given such as, "What's an ark?"  "Why me?"  "How am I going to explain this?"  "But I've never done this before!"  And so on.  A lot of those responses seem legitimate to me, but the only response we find in scripture is as follows:
"Thus Noah did."
-Genesis 6:22
I see the same thing with Abraham.  In Genesis 12:1 God tells him to "go."  Genesis 12:4 tells us Abraham's response, "So Abram went forth."  No arguments.  No complaining.  No second-guessing.  It strikes me that Noah and Abraham are two pretty big names in Christendom.  I wonder if their unconditional and absolute surrender to God has anything to do with that?
Are you looking for God to do great things in your life?  Are you waiting for the next move of His Spirit?  Are you in search of God's "strong support?"  The "good hand" of the Lord upon you?
Here's my best advice...
"Thus Noah did."

The Kingdom of God is Like...The Shoelaces of a Child

the kingdom of god is like...

the shoelaces of a child.
The kingdom of God is like the shoelaces of a child.  Once a child has learned to tie their own shoes, it is their responsibility to keep them tied (see Colossians 2:6).  If they refuse that responsibility and trip over their own laces, then they are reaping the consequences of what they have sown (see James 4:17).
It's ver intersting though isn't it, watching a child and their shoelaces?  There seems to be a two-fold process.  The first is learning to tie the shoes.  The second is learning how to keep them tied.  Learning to tie them is not enough, is it? (see Philippians 3:12-14).  Some children learn more quickly than others.  Some children have to experience some significant falls before they embrace the importance of keeping those laces tied (see Jeremiah 2:5).
How long will a good paren take to teach their child how to tie their shoes?  Right...as long as it takes.  Some learn sooner.  Some learn later.  What's most important is that they learn.  Walking is at best awkward in untied shoes.  Running and climbing are virtually impossible.
Such is the kingdom of God.
