"The Bible"
INTRODUCTION
"But know this first of all, that no prophecy of scripture
is a matter of one's own interpretation, for no prophecy
was ever made by an act of human will, but men moved
by the Holy Spirit spoke from God."
2 Peter 1:20-21
There are at least nine essential components to a complete definition of the Bible. They are:
1. Divine Origin (from God).
"All scripture is inspired (God-breathed)..."
2 Timothy 3:16a
2. Human Agency (through men).
"Men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God."
2 Peter 1:21b
3. Written Form (words).
"The word of God..."
Hebrews 4:12a
4. Genesis (original text).
Inspiration does not guarantee that every copy of the original is without error;
nor does it guarantee that every subsequent claim is the word of God.
5. Supernatural (living and active).
"The word of God is living and active...
Blessed is he who reads...hears...heeds.
the things which are written in it."
Hebrews 4:12b; Revelation 1:3
6. Eternal (without end).
"The word of God stands forever."
Isaiah 40:8
7. Immutable (without change).
"You shall not add to nor take away from it."
Deuteronomy 12:32
8. Inerrant (without errors).
"The law of the Lord is perfect."
Psalm 19:7
9. Ultimate Authority (life and practice).
"Everything pertaining to life and godliness."
2 Peter 1:3
